Some background information!
The Association Laurentienne des Proches de la personne atteinte de maladie mentale was created in 1986 as a much-needed safe space for caregivers of people living with mental illnesses.
Back then, seven parents got together and founded the Association Laurentienne des Parents et Amis du Malade Mental Inc.
Thanks to its great rigour and volunteer efforts, the organization received its first provincial grant in 1990. In 1993, the group bought the little red house on Parent Street to offer family caregivers a haven. In 1998, the name changed to the Association Laurentienne des Proches de la Personne Atteinte de Maladie Mentale Inc.
In 2016, ALPPAMM turned 30 and was at a crossroad. Staff and the Board of Directors undertook a great reflection on the future, asking themselves who they were and what they wanted to be. An action plan was implemented to improve services, extend their outreach across the Laurentians and increase public awareness and recognition of the organization.
From the onset in 2017, a new name was chosen to showcase the core identity and values of the Association laurentienne des proches de la personne atteinte de maladie mentale: La Halte des proches. This new name and a new brand image would allow us to become better known throughout the Laurentides and help us move forward by providing psychosocial intervention, training, conferences and professional custom services.
